This is a wonderful place to stay. The staff is welcoming, helpful and courteous. The room was clean and comfortable. The whole building is a landmark with fun treats through the day- and a breakfast that is far superior to chain hotel breakfasts.

Loved this little b and b. Everything was easy, quaint, clean. Our host was so helpful and nice. She prepared happy hour and chocolate chip cookies each night. We will definitely be back. We had dinner at Mezzaluna and Zum Sushi and loved them both!

Great spot. Room was clean, though small (room 101). It was difficult to store our luggage and the shelf above the small bathroom sink made face washing and teeth brushing difficult. However, the overall experience was great. Wonderful breakfast, service, location. Check in was smooth. We would stay again.

The room design of room 110 has a flaw that the main room light has a on/ off switch tied to a timer and motion sensor rather than a normal on/ off switch. I booked the Charles to attend a conference at Asilomar but also so I could join an online mindfulness retreat in the early morning and late night. We had lots of meditation and lessons where we needed to be present (and not move). The lights would turn off every 30 min! I tried to wave towards the sensor a few times but they would not turn back on. I had to stand to activate the sensor for the light to turn on. It’s very rude to do during the mindfulness teachings and meditation so I just sat in the dark. I ended up moving the tiny end table to be close to the desk lamp knowing that the main light would turn off. The natural light is not good in the room so the extra light is necessary. I expect a 4-star hotel would have considered how a guest can live comfortably in the room. Lights are essential. The design of the room is aesthetically nice and I appreciate the respect to the historical nature of the building. The staff were all great. However, I will not stay again because of the light. People who want a staycation and work remotely would have difficulty also.

We spent four fabulously comfortable and decadent four nights at The Charles in Pacific Grove. The rooms are beautifully decorated with a nod to the age of the building (1904). Historic photographs of Pacific Grove line the hallways. The lounge is comfortable and the late afternoon wine and snacks added to the conviviality. Breakfasts were varied and fresh. The breads and quiche were yummy. The beds are soft, the sheets cotton, and at night you can hear the faint crash of the waves on the shore. The hotel is in walking distance to an array of restaurants. The house-managers and staff were very welcoming and friendly. We will come again if we come back to the area.
