We recently stayed at The Arthouse in NYC & it was one of the most disappointing hotel experiences ever. From the moment we arrived, nearly everything that could go wrong did go wrong. We arrived at 12:30 pm to be told that our reservation was for the previous weekend. I had the Expedia confirmation in hand clearly showing the correct dates, yet it took a manager’s intervention before they finally found our reservation. Strike one. I had specifically requested an upper-floor “City View” room—one that was shown online with beautiful double windows and a stunning view of the Upper West Side skyline. Instead, we were initially offered a room on the 5th floor, with the promise that an upper floor would be available in an hour. Since we had a prior appointment, we didn’t return until later in the afternoon, expecting everything to be resolved. What we walked into was not what we booked. The room was tiny,so cramped that my husband & I could barely walk around the bed or get to the bathroom. The “city view” turned out to be a single small window completely obscured by scaffolding & black netting. We literally could not tell if it was day or night. Noise from the elevator was relentless,an eerie, mechanical groaning that we heard constantly during our stay. When we expressed our disappointment at the front desk, we were told the building was undergoing renovations. No apology..no offer to adjust the rate. Just a shrug. When asked why premium rates were being charged, no answer.
