威爾斯國家圖書館

The National Library of Wales is situated in Aberystwyth and houses more than 4 million printed volumes, including many rare books. Yny lhyvyr hwnn, the first book ever to be published in Welsh in 1546, can also be found in the library archives.

The impressive building, built in 1909, commands the hilltop on Penglais Road in the city centre. It was designed by architect, Sidney Greenslade, who won the prestigious competition to design the building, which has since been modified over the years to make room for larger collections.

The National Library of Wales contains a wide range of classics, including the Black Book of Carmarthen, the Book of Taliesin and the works of Geoffrey Chaucer. Although the library has a diverse collection, its collecting policy is focused on Welsh-language and Celtic material. The National Library is a very significant part of Welsh cultural heritage and a justifiably popular point of interest for visitors of all ages.

Visitors can spend hours discovering Welsh history within the library’s many rooms. As well as the extensive book collections, you can explore new exhibitions, historical displays and beautiful artwork, providing a real treat that will keep visitors entertained for hours.

Standing proudly on top of a hill, the library offers stunning panoramic views over Aberystwyth and the crystal waters of Cardigan Bay. It’s a bit of a climb up to the entrance, but the cosy library cafe offers a welcome respite and a chance to relax with some cake and tea.

Get lost in the National Library of Wales and emerge with a far better understanding of Welsh heritage. A truly memorable day trip, the library is a local must-see for those visiting the beautiful town of Aberystwyth.
