My husband and I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express at Monterey Bay by IHG over the Christmas holidays, and we had a wonderful experience. The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming. Everyone was lovely, and a special mention goes to the sweetest daughter of one of the receptionists, who truly added a warm and personal touch to our stay. Breakfast each morning was delicious and well organized, with plenty of options to choose from. There were eggs, sausages, yogurt, biscuits, pancakes, muffins, bagels, and three different juices—something for everyone, and a great way to start the day. Our room was extremely comfortable. We had a king-size bed, which was absolutely fabulous—large, cozy, and perfect for relaxing. The room also had a nice TV. While it wasn’t a smart TV, we brought our laptop and connected it, so we were still able to watch Netflix and Disney Plus without any issues. The hotel’s location is another big plus. It sits right on the border of Seaside and Monterey, very close to the beach and water, as well as several delicious restaurants. Monterey is easily walkable, though it can be a bit of a long walk, so comfortable shoes are recommended. We also appreciated that our room faced the back of the property rather than the highway, which made it feel quieter and more peaceful. The ONLY downside worth noting is that the hotel is not one large indoor building. The rooms are accessed from the outside, meaning you do have to walk outdoors to get to your room.

Hotel is run down. The bathroom walls have a lot of water damage due to the layout of the shower, water sprays out all over the floor and walls. There was hair stuck to the closet door. Needs to be repainted, paint is dirty chipping molding. There is rust around the hardware. The carpet and furniture are filthy with stains. I would not stay again.

The hotel and room were perfectly adequate and what one expects from an older hotel that’s been revamped sometime in the decade. What stood out was the AWFUL layout of the breakfast buffet and FILTHY dining area. The breakfast space is entirely too small for a hotel of this size, especially when full. The dining area was full of spilled food on the floor & tables, trash left anywhere & everywhere *except* a trash can, and abandoned food in the buffet line. It looked like no one bothers to go around to clean & tidy the dining area until breakfast is over. While a fancy machine that grinds coffee beans on demand per cup, then heats water, THEN dispenses coffee 4 minutes later sounds cute and fun, having only 2 of these machines for a hotel of this size is ridiculous. Just brew an urn of coffee that serves more than 2 people at a time! If you plan to eat breakfast at this hotel, do so at your own risk. It’s a nightmare instead of a fun perk during your travels.

We stayed there for one night. Over all not bad but breakfast needs some work. We went there around 8:45 and there weren’t any food left so we had to wait and then by the time we had a table there was already a like to get hot food. Hot food comes out too slow a lot of people are just asking if there was anymore hot food left like their eggs, potatoes & sausages. By the time we ate almost 9:20 there was patties out but the breakfast close at 9 so most people were already done eating.

We have stayed at Holiday Inn/Express many times and we were sad to see poor maintenance at this last stay. The glass light fixture was broken and the towel rack was hanging off the wall. This was unsafe for us. I was surprised to see the room like this.
