My husband and I stayed in house #4. Despite the somewhat run down exterior, the inside of the house was a pleasant surprise. It was very clean and cozy. A major highlight was the screen porch where we enjoyed the peaceful river view while having coffee in the mornings. The people from the management office were very friendly and accommodating and offered tips for restaurants and things to do. Golconda is a short drive to Shawnee National Forest which offers amazing hiking. The only real negatives were that the bed was very hard and there could be a sign or two directing guests to the properties as they're pretty secluded. A very good experience overall. We've already recommended it to family.
The property has been restored to a 1920 homestead and it is extremely inviting and comfortable. The porch overlooking the Ohio River was an awesome feature and we enjoyed our coffee while waiting for the sunrise and listening to the water flow by. The houses are very private at the end of Water Street. Dan, the manager was very hospitable and called prior to our check in to go over the details and make recommendations about the local color. The outside of the buildings need a little TLC, but when you go inside, you forget all about that. The place was charming and definitely a place to disconnect and unwind.
Perfect location for visiting many of the Shawnee sites. They've done a great job filling the house with period furniture. Very homey. We visited the first week of November and the fall colors were fabulous. It would be great to visit in warmer weather and enjoy the river view from the screened in porch.
My husband and I love staying here. This year we brought our son and daughter-in-law as well. The house is unique and perfect for a quiet family getaway. We enjoyed being able to go off the grid and spend time together as a family to reconnect. We'll definitely be back!
The history of the houses is very interesting although the representation on the internet is decieving. There is no relaxing hot tub to enjoy the beautiful view of tbe Ohio river as was stated in the add on the internet at time if booking. And the air conditioning quit in the middlr of the afternoon and night. There are 5 names to call if you have trouble checking in or with your stay. After an hour of attempts both calling and texting one person respinded by coming by. Thanks Tyler he just couldnt do anything about the issues. There is a hit tub in house #2 it just hasnt worked for sometime and they havent bother to fix it or remove it. I was told it is being removed from the advertisement online.we were very dissapointed. We drove 3.5 hours to celebrate our friends anniversary in a hot tub that wasnt there. You can view the one on house number 2s porch but it doesnt work. I guess you could set in it with no water and watch the river go by. I had to clean grass away from the coils on AC unit and reset thermostat to make it work twice. The upstairs bedrooms were so hot you could bare to sleep in them. We all moved down stairs at 1a.m. to get relief. Buyer beware!
The house is located in a beautiful and serene place. This was such a perfect stay and I wish we could have stayed longer. It was decorated in antique style. We never got to see the host but he was very communicative. House was very clean from inside but could have used more cleaning out in the porch. Will definitely try to return next summer.
I wonder why it doesn't have more 5 star reviews.
The house is lovely and has all we needed to make a meal. the screened in porch overlooking the river is fabulous. That is where we spent our time.
BUT no internet. Had to go to a bar to get a connection. No service for SPRINT in the entire area. that part is not the owner's fault.
Our stay was during Thanksgiving. It was biting cold, foggy & quite different from home. We were able to cook & enjoy tv. This was a very different experience from staying in a hotel.
