This was my first time seeing flamingoes in the wild (just visible in the centre if you squint hard enough!), which was a bucket list item for me. This trip makes a good trip for a first day in San Pedro de Atacama, as the altitude isn't too high and will ease you in to some of the higher altitude trips fr later in the week. #LifeatExpedia

Just outside San Pedro de Atacama are the ruins of a 12th-century fort built atop a promontory overlooking the Rio San Pedro. It was built by the Atacameños to protect themselves from the expanding Inca Empire, but the real threat came centuries later when the Conquistadors invaded and conquered the fortress in 1540
