Escape the crowds and relax on the golden sands of Barcelona’s northernmost beach. Cool off in the inviting Mediterranean Sea or dine at a traditional chiringuito.

Llevant Beach is the northernmost of Barcelona’s beaches and one that presents a decidedly laid-back Mediterranean ambience. Here you’ll encounter watersports, children’s activities and Barcelona’s famous chiringuito beach bars, yet with fewer people than the city’s other beaches. Opened to the public in 2006, Llevant Beach sits in front of the contemporary Diagonal Mar neighborhood.

Llevant Beach is an ideal place to escape the crowds and simply relax. For extra comfort and protection from the sun you can rent sun loungers and beach umbrellas. And when you need to cool down the enticing Mediterranean Sea is only a few steps away. The water is safe for swimming and lifeguards patrol the beach, thus making it a popular spot with families.

For the active beachgoer there’s the chance to rent jet skis, ride behind a speedboat on an inflatable water sled or take to the calm water aboard a pedalo. There’s also a kids’ playground, with activities such as a rope climbing frame.

Be sure to visit one of the chiringuito beach bars that line the beach, where you can purchase soft drinks and cocktails, snacks and seafood dishes. In the evening the bars often host live entertainment in the form of DJs and concerts.

Just a short walk from the beach you’ll find one of Barcelona’s many architectural landmarks, the triangular-shaped Forum Building. It is home to the Museu Blau, which has exhibits that trace the evolution of life on Earth. Check out the 360-foot (110-meter) tall Torre Diagonal Zero Zero nearby or browse the stores of the huge Centre Commercial de Diagonal Mar.

Llevant Beach is about a 10-minute drive from Plaça de Catalunya, in the center of Barcelona. The beach is easily accessible via public buses, trams and the metro. A cycle path lines the beach and there is a designated bicycle parking area. If you are feeling energetic then it’s around a 1-hour walk from La Barceloneta to Llevant Beach.
