La Ventana
Kite surfers and beachgoers flock to this serene village, whose sandy strand provides stunning views of the Sea of Cortez and Jacques Cousteau Island.

The pristine beach and rock formations of La Ventana provide a picturesque and serene backdrop for kiteboarding. Kite-related watersports are popular amid the steady winds of this stunning resort area with bars and hotels. Let the wind be your guide on this curved bay.

Find a spot on La Ventana Beach to enjoy a picnic with your family and watch the kite surfers. The breeze will keep you fairly cool while you relax in the sun. Bathe in hot springs that mix thermal waters with the sea. La Ventana Bay is perfect for a refreshing swim with your friends.

Head to one of the sports operators and take classes in kiteboarding and other wind-powered watersports. Consistent winds provide excellent conditions from November to March.

Go kayaking, diving and fishing in this hub of aquatic activities. Admire the contrast between the desert terrain of this tranquil fishing village and the bright blue of the Sea of Cortez.

On the horizon, spot the rocky terrain of Isla Cerralvo. It is also known as Jacques Cousteau Island in homage to the French oceanographer who led expeditions here and considered this region the world’s aquarium. Go snorkeling in the clear water of the Gulf of California for a glimpse of the eclectic aquatic life to which he was referring.

Choose from the many hotels and rentable villas lining the rear of the beach or stay in La Ventana Campground at its northern end. The name of the town is Spanish for The Window, possibly named for the open space between the offshore islands.

The town overlooks its namesake bay in the Gulf of California. Drive southeast from the central district of La Paz for 25 miles (40 kilometers) to get here in roughly 45 minutes. While here, stop at the neighboring towns of El Sargento and San Juan de los Planes.

With its steady winds and dramatic scenery, La Ventana is a popular haven for surfers.

"Love the concept and execution. The food was great. The staff was hit or miss in terms of friendliness/hospitality. Felt like I was in a masculine wind-surfers playground. I wasn't prepared for how cold it got at night. I would definitely come back with my son--very kid-friendly."

We like the laid-back style and the great seafood in the area. It is focused largely on water sports, but hiking and other options are readily available.
