With its overhanging clifftop observation deck and 16th-century castle, this spot’s serene ambiance and picturesque views of mountains and valleys bring joy.

La Gándara is a quaint village in the midst of spectacular scenery. Hiking trails meander up and down the mountains and valleys, beside the Gándara River and its waterfall. Bring your hiking boots, snacks and enough water for your trip through the forests of this bucolic terrain.

Brave yourself for the ascent to the Mirador de la Gándara, which has wonderful vistas from dizzying heights. Its viewing platform hangs over the edge of a cliff, providing unobstructed views of the scenic valley before you. Bring your whole family to the adjacent park and set down a blanket for a picnic. The park has a playground and a barbecue zone too.

Marvel at the impressive Cascada la Gándara waterfall that rushes down a nearby rock formation. Head down to the valley floor and walk alongside the Gándara stream. Take a guided tour in the summer from the Centro de Interpretación, which provides information about the natural surroundings.

In the heart of this serene terrain stands the historic Palacio de los Zorrilla. Stroll through the stone arches of this 16th-century castle, which was founded by Juan Zorrilla de San Martín el Viejo as part of a struggle over the Soba Valley. Take photos of the structure in winter, when the mountains in the background are covered in snow.

Note that the name of the village comes from an antiquated Spanish term for low-lying terrain comprising untouched fields and wilderness.

Find the town near the southern border of the Cantabria region in northern Spain. Drive south from Santander for 36 miles (58 kilometers) to get here in a little more than 1 hour. You can also ride a bus to the main stop in the center of the village.

Visit other highlights of the region, such as Bilbao, the Monumento Natural de Ojo Guareña and Parque Natural de Montes Obarenes-San Zadornil.

Overnight stop
Good hotel for an overnight stop on the way to Santander ferry port. Slightly small room but adequate for the one night. Good evening meal in the restaurant. Breakfast was a little uninspiring.
