Very relaxed stay. Short walk from station or book a taxi for a small fee if you have luggage. Ruriko-in temple and Mt Hiei cable car station is very close with lots of hiking and walking trails. Dinner was very nice and staff were super friendly. Special thanks to Hotel Manager Mr Koichi and all staff for making our stay an enjoyable one.
The hotel was so comfortable, welcoming and had all the desired amenities. We used the sauna which was really lovely addition to our stay and enjoyed the hotel shop too. It was in a peaceful area and the staff were always on hand to answer any questions and offer refreshments. We had seen a couple of negative reviews for this property prior to staying but our experience was nothing short of exceptional. Looking forward to returning in the future.
We spent two weeks in Japan, staying at several hotels and Airbnbs, and Moksa quickly became our favorite. The hotel is set on a stunning garden, and the staff welcomed us with genuine warmth. Compared to other places we stayed, Moksa offered spacious rooms with bathrooms completely separate from the showers, plus adorable, comfortable loungewear to wear around the property. We also loved the sauna and contrast therapy sessions, which were excellent value. This is absolutely a place I’d recommend to anyone visiting Kyoto.
Me and my partner missed the shinkansen and the bus that was going to take us to the hotel, so we got even more behind our schedule of our check-in time. We told the staff beforehand and apologized, they were extremely understanding of our situation. When we got there, we were welcomed with warm smiles and helpful information of our accomodation and they even gave us some snacks after our long travel.
We sayed in Moksa in september. Our shinkansen got significantly delayed, and my phone roaming stopped working, so I could not call and say we would arrive late for dinner. The staff were incredibly friendly, and were able to accomodate our dinner reservation. The food was delicious, the garden is a delight, and I wish we would have spent a few more days in this hotel. Loved it!
The best hotel we have ever stayed in. BEAUTIFUL location surrounded by nature, and the staff was incredible. Very clean, amazing food, and we will absolutely be back on our next visit to Japan!
This property is high-end Japanese luxury with elegant yet simple/clean design - meant for a serene break from the noise & bustle of Kyoto, nestled in a lovely mountainous area. The room design is beautiful. The staff are so polite & attentive to all needs - the property manager is always present & a lovely gentleman- each time we would walk out of the property he would run out with water bottles in hand to make sure we carried hydration. We are seasoned travellers & never experienced this level of service. The evening dinners with set menus are Michelin star level dining experience with open wood oven watching the culinary preparations. Yes the dinner is a bit expensive but well worth it. All basic alcohol drinks are included. We did not try the special sauna experience but would suggest they include it in the daily cost of the hotel rather than extra. We are walkers/hikers - My only suggestions to the hotel is to create a walking map of areas near the hotel to walk & climb. 5 star experience would revisit again fir sure
Beautiful hotel with very friendly staff. The location is a bit outside of Kyoto in a very beautiful and quiet surrounding. The rooms are very nice and I had a nice bathroom with a huge bathtub and also nice views of the beautiful garden. The only thing I didn't like was the breakfast and there was also no in-house dining in the evening
The hotel is in a picturesque area away from the main city surrounded by nature. The room was exquisite, the amenities were wonderful and the staff are so accommodating and pleasant. Probably the best hotel experience we’ve ever had.
Would only recommend more transportation options to get into downtown Kyoto.
It was the Japanese spirit people come to experience in their trip to Japan, but rarely do!To look out on that garden whilst having the hotel breakfast especially prepared individually on locally made pottery was a highlight of my visit to Japan. The staff are exceptional in behaviour and manners. This experience in the mountains outside of Kyoto was tryly unique
We liked the kindness of the staff. They were very eager to help but language difficulty with most of the staff.
It would be helpful that the staff could propose and arrange activities.
The environment was very beautiful and peaceful.
Easy acces to Kyoto by train.
It was my first time visiting Kyoto and I picked this hotel due to its great reviews.
The staff was so kind -always attentive and helpful regarding any needs that I had. I was always greeted the second I entered the lobby as well as around the hotel.
I booked the garden view room -it was amazing. It had a large balcony that opened up into the Japanese garden that the hotel perfected! There was so much space -two bathrooms, a living room, a tatami mat area, and a double bed. I am a clean freak, and I don't think I've seen a cleaner hotel room in my life. They also offered great pajamas.
I utilized the sauna Cypress room -it was essentially your own private spa. Make sure to book their saunas in advance as their reservations do fill up.
Breakfast was included every day. The food was good (they had American options and Japanese options). The restaurant overlooked the Japanese garden. I could sit there forever.
The only downside of the hotel is that it is a bit far from the downtown area. I utilized Uber and there was one night that I couldn't get a car for so long (I tried for hours) that I ended up missing my dinner reservation. There is a train close-by however you do have to trek uphill a bit to and from the train. I was also with my mother who couldn't do hilly walks so the train wasn't an option. The car ride to the downtown area was about 30 minutes with traffic. Sometimes more or less. I still think the hotel was worth it and would stay again despite the location.
We stayed at the hotel for 6 nights. It is best reachable by car. The hotel is recent built, very modern, has large rooms and very well maintained. The beautiful garden seen from the bar and restaurant was amazing to watch. Every day room cleaning was outstanding. And the collagen sauna was exceptional.
It was indeed confirmed that the hotel staff does not help with luggage, even though there are up to 3 people sitting at the front desk at a time and dolly standing in the lobby. In contrast, the staff at `Hakone Retreat Villas` helped us with the luggage.
There are two big things, which threw us off materially and culturally, and we are glad that it happened on the last night of our stay.
1. The hotel offers 6 course dinner on a rather pricier side (for Japan), 19,200 JPY per person. While the chef was super professional and entertaining, the traditional japanese beef was swapped for chicken. Just the night before, we went to high cousine `Buon'Agio` restaurant in Kyoto downtown, where a dinner with Wagyu beef cooked in front of us cost 25% less.
2. There were just 2 of us along with 2 Japanese ladies. At the end of the dinner only two of us were asked to have our desert in the lobby bar. While the other two japaneese ladies were let to finish their dinner at the restaurant.
Both concerns were expressed to the hotel staff, although the manager has not contacted us while they had enough time to do so.
This ruined our initial impression about japaneese hospitality.
Probobly the best hotel I’ve ever stayed at. Area is incredibly beautiful as well. Make sure to have lunch at the information center next to the train station.
Even when you are far from Kyoto downtown, you just have to walk like 10 minutes to get a train station. The Hotel is beautiful and it was the best room I stayed on
I loved everything about the Moksa Hotel! The accommodation is a bit out of the way, but still easy to reach by subway and bus. The hotel is located at the foot of a mountain with a forest and a river, and is very quiet! The staff was great, the rooms were stunningly beautiful, and the spa, which you could book as an additional option, was a dream. The garden is definitely the highlight. Drinks at the bar and in the room are free. If you don't want to book dinner, you can also order delivery. One thing that could be improved is that there is also fruit or yoghurt at breakfast.
It was one of the nicest hotels I've ever stayed in! I definitely want to come back!
