A grove of ancient cedars.
We hiked up to Taiko-iwa (太鼓岩) during our Shiratani Unsuikyo hike in Yakushima. It has a fantastic view of the surrounding mountain range at 1,050 meters above sea level.

Much of this island is part of the Yakushina National Park and also a World Natural Heritage site.

*From the entrance of Shiratani Unsuikyo, it's about a 6km-hike round trip.

Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine (白谷雲水峡) is a lush forest, full of moss covered rocks and trees. Some places have a clear path, others a pink ribbon is your only guide. But it is an easy hiking course and a great place for beginners to explore Yakushima National Park. In 1993, part of the park was registered as a World Nature Heritage Site for its unique ecosystem.

*You can take a bus from Miyanoura to the entrance of Shiratani Unsuikyo.

If you love moss, this is the place for you when in Yakushima. Shiratani Unsuikyo is famous for Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke, but it's also a great hiking spot for both beginners and long-time hikers. This was on our hike up to Taiko-iwa.

Much of this island is part of the Yakushina National Park and also a World Natural Heritage site.

*You'll see wild monkeys and deer along the way (non violent and mostly completely oblivious of you).

Nagata Inaka-hama Beach (永田いなか浜) is located on the west side of Yakushima, a gorgeous island filled with lush forests and mountains.

This beach is not only a great spot to watch the beautiful sunsets, but is also the most popular place for sea turtles to lay their eggs in Japan.

Every year many turtles come back to this shore from May to July. If you are interested, you can sign up at the information center to watch the turtles lay their eggs with a volunteer guide at night.

*Closest bus station: Inaka-hama Bus Stop (it's about a 30min drive from Miyanoura or 45min drive from Yakushima Airport)
