Jefferson County Historical Society Tours

Again, this is is really called the Jefferson Museum of Art and History, but, to-may-to, to-mah-to, take your pick.

A nice turn-of-the-century brick building with some art deco flourishes which add a certain playfulness to the design.

The grand staircase complete with a red silk barrier rope, a classic umbrella stand and the rather incongruous addition of a thermostat and an electronic alarm pad.

The building which houses the Historical Society, or as it's actually called: the Jefferson Museum of Art and History once contained the county courthouse and the city jail.

The courtroom remains intact, though it is now used to exhibit a continually-changing display of art.

The jail can be found in the basement, looking much as it must have for the hundred or so years of its operation.

The cells are there -- including one for solitary confinement; the glaring lights and concrete walls are all in place; and what would a worthwhile prison be without its cumbersome iron shackles?

However, few of them will actually stay at the "boutique hotel" contained within. Which is probably why the owner is looking to sell it.

If you like company, but are not overly fond of money, you might drop by and make him an offer.
