At a turn in the Main River stands a medieval castle containing two museums that reveal the history of a quaint district in Frankfurt’s western suburbs.

While in Frankfurt, plan a visit to Höchst Castle, an enchanting 14th-century structure made up of a cylindrical tower and turrets. Within are a pair of museums that provide information on the surrounding historic district and the industrial company that thrived here. Admire the clean and regal design that makes the castle resemble a structure straight out of Disney.

Consider the intriguing history of the castle, which was inhabited by the archbishop of Mainz. Enter for the exhibits tracing the history of the famous Farbwerke Höchst porcelain manufacturer. An adjacent display provides a window into the past of this Old Town quarter.

Pass through the arch carved into the heart of the main building and begin exploring the historic center. Since this part of Frankfurt wasn’t bombed during World War II, you’ll find buildings with colorful timber designs that evoke the Germany of the Middle Ages. Sit at a café with a hot drink or a beer and watch people go by.

The 18th-century Bolongaro Palace is among the highlights near the castle. Visit the historic center in summer for the Höchst Castle Festival.

Climb aboard a ferry on the river to reach the other side, where you’ll see the sandy ridges of the Schwanheimer Dune. Wander between the trees of the Brüningpark that borders the northern side of the Main River. Enjoy a meal and a few drinks at a beer garden with views of the water.

Höchst Castle is in its namesake district in the Ortsbezirk West province of Frankfurt. From the city center, drive west for 7 miles (11 kilometers) to arrive at the castle in about 25 minutes. You can also travel by S-Bahn or train for about 10 minutes to reach the Frankfurt-Höchst station on the northern side of the complex.

While here, see other attractions such as the Fraport Arena, the Höchster Stadtpark and the Schwanheimer Düne.
