Perched high on a rocky outcrop is one of Austria’s most magnificent medieval castles, famed for having never been conquered.

Hochosterwitz Castle is one of the country’s most impressive examples of imposing medieval architecture. The castle can be seen from over 20 miles (32 kilometers) around thanks to its strategic location atop a steep mountain peak. Travel back in time as you discover the inventive methods, most famously the 14 gates that guard its entrance, that were used to keep enemies at bay.

Like a video game, Hochosterwitz Castle’s 14 gates had to each be conquered for intruders to gain access to the heart of the castle complex. None managed it, with legend saying that only the first four were ever bested. Walk the long winding path up to the castle and inspect the different gates, each of which presented a different obstacle to intruders. Imagine enemy armies coming face to face with boiling oil, hidden spikes or vast drawbridges.

Soak up the far-reaching panoramas, which extend across the ridges of the Austrian Alps, as you explore the castle. Be sure to visit the picturesque little church found in the castle’s courtyard. The church features a small chapel with beautiful frescoes and an altar that dates to 1673.

Learn more about the fascinating history of Hochosterwitz Castle at the on-site museum. On display are an array of weapons including helmets, spears, lances and guns. Children can dress up and inspect the objects on show in the armory where all manner of medieval weapons are exhibited.

For those unable to climb the steep path to the castle there is the Inclined Railway. It shuttles visitors 344 feet (105 meters) up the steep cliff in just 95 seconds. Built in 1992, the railway is a true engineering marvel and has transported some 1 million people in its lifetime.

Hochosterwitz Castle is open from May to October and has an entry fee with several different concession tickets available. A separate charge is required for use of the Inclined Railway. Find ample free parking. The nearest train station is Launsdorf-Hochosterwitz, 2 miles (3 kilometers) away.
