A friendly hotel in a deep rural part of Shetland. Undergoing some renovations at present and very busy over the weekend. Good pleasant and reasonably priced food and drink.
My husband and I really liked this place.
The room was lovely and comfortable.
The breakfast was served by a knowledgeable person of the area.
Great walk just outside the hotel.

Disliked: Property conditions & facilities
The staff were friendly. The food served at the hotel restaurant was excellent! We enjoyed the locally sourced seafood very much. However, some of the hotel rooms were under renovation and there could be slight smell.in those rooms. The heating only worked during limited times. The room can be chilling at times when the heating is not on, even in summer. The location is great as it is close to the Eshaness cliffs and the circular hiking trail of hillswick. If you fancy an exploration of the north mainland it will be a place for you.
Really enjoyed our 3 night stay - wish we could have stayed longer. Friendly welcoming staff and room was clean and comfortable with a fantastic shower! Breakfast had a great selection to set you up for the day and we really enjoyed our meals in the evening. Even managed to spot the otters on the shore. Would definitely return.
We were on a 3-week tour of Highlands & Islands. Owners Andrea and Paul were stupendous hosts! So kind and helpful! Food, especially dinner, was first class! We learned much about the history and where to visit. Irving, the waiter, was charming. We strongly recommend.
Loved our overnight stay at St Magnus Bay...Everyone we came into contact with were Very friendly and happy go lucky...Food was outstanding and I cannot rate highly enough...Beds were super comfy...
The hotel sits in a beautiful part of Shetland. The hotel and everyone there made me feel welcome & appreciated from the moment I stepped through the door. The room was comfortable and had all the nice little touches. I especially appreciated the people there sharing their knowledge and history of the area.

Disliked: Property conditions & facilities
Extremely old and a bit dilapidated, thought they may have even been closed. For £200 a lot to pay for not much. Best part though is generous helping of salmon at breakfast. Room was big, remodeled and comfortable.
The original part of the hotel appear a little dingy but it is over 100 years old.
We were in the annex which was much brighter and had a lovely sea view.
The en suite was quite tiny but featured new facilities. Unfortunately there wer no shelves within the shower enclosure for placing soap or hair shampoo.
The meals were good quality but expensive.

When we checked in and asked the proprietor if we were getting a "superior sea-view" room, which was specified in our reservation confirmation, she told us that Expedia had paid for only a standard room. She then said she would upgrade us "as a gesture of good will." So I don't know what happened. I had specifically asked for a sea-view room, and there was such a room available. Obviously a breakdown in communications somewhere.
We were not greeted upon arrival and had to wait quite awhile for someone to come lead us to our room. The bed was not comfortable and lacked a headboard. We could not control the bathroom combo light/fan, rather, it went on and off at its own whim. At breakfast, it was unclear whether to enter the dining room - the door was closed and had a sign saying, "Please wait to be seated." Once inside, it was so unbearably hot that my husband and I sweated throughout the meal. (Outdoors was not at all hot, but temperate.) Breakfast food was good; dinner the night before was not good. The main course tasted as if it had been frozen and reheated, or was made with powdered ingredients. Not as expected given previous reviews.
