Growing up in Australia listening to the tales of bravery and valour shown by both sides at Gallipoli in 1915, it was only natural that it was one of the first places I should visit in Turkey. This is the French Military Cemetery and it was so incredibly peaceful, it was one of my favourite places. It is beautifully tended, with lovely views out over the sea and I was the only person there - probably because it was the middle of winter! I will go back here and spend a few days self driving in order to spend more time in places like this. I am glad i did a tour that first day though, being both pushed for time and interested to hear the Turkish perspective from my very knowledgeable guide.

The story of Gallipoli and WWI is taught young in Australia. There is a national holiday to celebrate the spirit of the ANZACs and to remember those who have fallen in the line of duty over the history of Australia. Anzac Cove in Turkey is not how you are led to believe by Australian media and certainly all these years after the fierce fighting that took place there, it is a calm, peaceful place. Very interesting to learn both the Turkish perspective and a truer version of this time in Australian history. Lest We Forget!
