This Jutland port town has art galleries, beaches, a botanical garden and a festival recreating the town’s centuries-old history.

Frederikshavn is a busy port town with a collection of galleries, museums and performing arts centers. It also has a historic fishing quarter, pretty beaches and a lively festival celebrating the town’s maritime heritage. Visit Frederikshavn on the Baltic Sea coast of Nordjylland, a northern region of the Jutland peninsula.

Cutting through the heart of town is the pedestrianized shopping street, Danmarksgade. Discover a mix of old merchant houses and modern buildings with boutiques, fashion retailers and restaurants. Find major attractions nearby, including the 19th-century Frederikshavn Kirke. See work by national artists, such as landscape painter Karl Bovin, and a large bookplate collection at Frederikshavn Art Museum.

Come to the harbor to see remnants of an old citadel. Krudttårnet is a 17th-century former defense tower with exhibits of artillery and the town’s naval history. A short walk from here is the idyllic fishing hamlet of Fiskerklyngen. Notice the yellow-painted houses typical of Nordjylland that line peaceful cobblestone lanes.

Visit the Bangsbo neighborhood, south of Frederikshavn’s town center. Find displays of antique furniture, military objects, figureheads and a 12th-century Viking ship at Bangsbo Museum. Admire colorful flowerbeds, enjoy a picnic and see deer at Bangsbo Botaniske Have. Explore a series of German-built bunkers at Bangsbo Fort Bunker Museum.

Throughout the summer, Frederikshavn’s beaches are perfect for enjoying Denmark’s long hours of sunshine. Palm Beach is a popular spot, with public barbecues, safe swimming areas and volleyball courts. Catch a ferryboat to Hirsholm, a small island with quieter beaches.

Enjoy Tordenskioldsdage in June. This festival spreads across the town’s harbor and streets, featuring battle reenactments, concerts, costume parades and food markets.

Frederikshavn is easy to reach by catching a train from Aarhus, Billund, Copenhagen or Odense. Get around the town center on foot. In the summer, use free town bike rentals.  The town’s location on the northeast coast of Jutland is ideal for daytrips to Skagen, Denmark’s northernmost town.

"Nice hotel in a handy location for rail and ferry travel. Really good selection of options for breakfast. Just find it a bit much to have to pay for a cup of coffee outside of meal times when many places in the world provide that for free."
