Eskdale walks from Eskdale campsite. A great place to pitch your tent. We took a 3km walk from the campsite, 1 1/2 hr moderate difficulty with a 20 Minute uphill ascent, through mine ruins and taking in a beautiful Tarn at the top.

"The hostel is cozy, located close to the lake, and within a short drive or a hike from Scafell. The food at the restaurant is fantastic. There is also a kitchen which can be used to cook your own food. The staff are all very friendly."

"For £60 a night I had a clean and comfy bed, a hot shower, and a tea and coffee station. The staff were friendly and helpful. Yes, it is a little noisy and crooked, but it's an old pub with normal pub hours so that's to be expected. I'm a female in my early 30s travelling on my own and I felt very safe and welcomed. Obviously this is not the hotels fault so still rating a 5, but just make sure you have a decent car to get there as the route is very steep and goes through a mountain range. The only suggestion that I would make is to make the breakfast hours start and hour earlier for those wanting to beat the parking at popular hiking spots. Also, after hearing a few conversations, it was not clear on the hotels.com site wether breakfast was included or not. I did pay for mine when I was there and it was only £10 so not a big deal anyway. "

The fort is entered through its main (south) gate, which, like those in the eastern and western walls, had two carriageways; the north gate had just one, presumably because of its precipitous location. The walls of the fort are of stone, although an internal bank of earth may have given access to the wall-walk and to the internal guard towers at the four corners, which have no entrances at ground level and were later additions.
