Scenic Galena is a place filled with historic buildings, but none is of greater significance than the Dowling House, the oldest house in the town. Come here to see a house and store carefully laid out as they would have been in the early 19th century, when this was the home of the Dowling family.
Stand outside the house and admire its charming exterior, which is built from limestone. Its age is apparent from the many distinctive features of its design, such as the pretty balcony that runs all the way along its upper floor. The house was built in 1826 by John Dowling, who was a respected local resident in the early days of Galena. Dowling and his family slept in the upper part of the house, while the downstairs area served as a trading post. It was the only one for quite some distance, so many different traders passed through here on their travels.
Step inside the house and admire the careful attention to detail on the ground floor. This part of the house is still set up like a store, with old-fashioned items set out on shelves just as they would have been in the 19th century. After exploring this section of the house, climb the creaky little staircase that leads up to the top floor. View the compact rooms where the family lived and slept. These rustic quarters are simple but homey. Again, care has been taken to retain authenticity. Everywhere you look are striking 19th-century artifacts and interesting pieces of furniture.

Watch as the guide points out the key objects among the jumble of fascinating items that furnish this building. The museum has an entry fee, but the price is included in the popular Galena Trolley Tours.
