Not a five star
This hotel is more of a cultural experience for those looking specifically for that type of holiday. It has many cultural 'activities' which were interesting when accesible, but not particularly well organised. The hotel is a symapthetically renovated old mansion. It's amenties are thus very much in keeping with local village traditions and 'environmentally appropriate', but definitely not five star. The public rooms were freezing and when not in their rooms, guests were requested to turn off their electric heaters. Hot water was limited to specific times of the day. I wasn't personally inconvenienced by this, but it conveyed the atmosphere of a boarding house. The local village in which the hotel is situated is very attractive and interesting, but it is about a half hour taxi ride to Dali. A plus was that English was well understood and the staff were highly educated amd motivated. The Linden Centre was by far the most expensive hotel at which I stayed during my 19-day trip to China and I did not think it was value for money and would not recommend it. I notice this hotel has rave reviwes on TripAdvisor and that's what attracted me there. However, I was disappointed.

Plus qu'un hotel
This is much more than just a place to sleep. Having said that, it is certainly a most comfortable hotel in every sense of the word and one feels as if the owners have taken the rare trouble to actually live in the rooms; there is plenty of storage, wet towel rails, heaters, international power points and comfortable beds. The bedrooms give onto quiet courtyards which resemble cloisters, and sleep quality is very high; inside and outside there are beautiful works of art adorning walls, ceilings… every room is a delight. For entertainment there is a TV viewing room, a music room, table-tennis, fitness, library, free wifi, and bicycles are freely available. Breakfast, plentiful and of good quality, can be taken in a variety of locations — terrace, dining room or bar; although it has to be said that the Chinese staff sometimes have difficulty in understanding western needs! A deliciously fresh and healthy dinner can be à la carte or can be cooked to personal specifications. Most of the staff also are very welcoming, helpful and the special atmosphere encourages guests to be more open with one another… not at all like a normal impersonal hotel. Dali old town is somewhat ‘touristy’ but has plenty of interesting shops, bakeries and restaurants. There are local buses and it takes about 30 mins by taxi (5€).

Best thing about Dali - and a highlight of Yunnan and China
If you're going to Dali or anywhere near Dali, definitely stay here. It's an amazing and unique place with great atmosphere. I remember sitting outside on the deck overlooking the rice fields with mountains in the distance as one of the highlights of my trip to China. Dali is close enough to take a cab to whenever you want to see it but the atmosphere of Xizhou, the little town where the Linden Centre is, is much more pleasant and relaxing than the tourist hustle and bustle of Dali itself. When we were there, one of the owners, Brian, took a group of guests on short trip to a nearby village and showed us around the town's market. He and the staff were also helpful about suggesting places for us to go (our favorite was a very nice out-of-the-way monastery in the middle of a forest). We ended up eating every dinner at the Centre because the food was so good.
