• A plane trip can be a cruisy experience if you carry the right gear. First of all you'll need basic toiletry items, such as deodorant, toothpaste and a toothbrush, a spare change of clothes and a magazine or two. Secondly, make room in your hand luggage for your phone, tablet and chargers, medications and perhaps a proper neck pillow as well. Last, but definitely not least, be sure to bring your passport, travel docs and your bank cards.

• While the list of restricted items can differ between airlines, the general guide to follow is nothing flammable, sharp or explosive. This includes things like screwdrivers, pocket knives, aerosol cans and flares. Sporting equipment like ice skates, and objects that could injure passengers, such as pepper spray and firearms, won't be allowed on board either.

• You've probably heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by prolonged periods of sitting. To lessen your risk on board, drink plenty of water, consider wearing compression socks and keep your feet and legs moving.
