• Flying can be a comfortable experience if you've got all the right gear. Firstly, you'll need basic toiletry items, such as deodorant, toothpaste and a toothbrush, a spare pair of socks and a good novel. Next, find a spot in your hand luggage for your phone, tablet and chargers, any daily medications and perhaps a blow-up neck pillow as well. Lastly, be sure to take your passport, travel documents and your bank cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of banned items differs between airlines, the general guide to follow is avoid carrying anything flammable, sharp or explosive. This includes things like knives, scissors, fuels and bleaching agents. Sports equipment like golf clubs, and objects that could injure passengers, such as swords and batons, can't come on board with you either.

What to wear on a flight:

• Your main priority is to be as comfortable as you can. Choose a pair of flat, closed-toe shoes, dress in loose, natural-fiber clothing and remember to take a jacket in case it gets chilly in the cabin.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a risk on long-haul flights. It results from blood clotting due to inactivity and poor circulation, so do some gentle leg and foot exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression tights or socks.

The trick is to be well organized before you arrive at security. That way, you'll be boarding that plane to Vaulion in no time flat. Follow these helpful tips and get your trip off to a fantastic start:

• Airport security personnel first need to make sure that you have a valid passport and matching travel documents before anything else. Keep them within easy reach.
• Time to strip down. Well sort of. Your coat, belt, keys and other contents of your pockets, like your earphones, will be required to go through the X-ray machine. Make your life easier by removing them before your turn.

• Knives and other sharp items are not allowed in the cabin. They'll be seized at security, so pack them safely away in your checked bags.
