If you plan to catch more than just forty winks, a quality neck pillow and a pair of earplugs will also come in handy. Finally, squeeze in a few toiletry items so you'll arrive at your destination looking fresh and raring to go.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Leave all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner in your checked baggage. Any liquids in your carry-on bag larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) will be confiscated by security. Sharp or pointed objects, like your treasured Swiss Army knife, and products which are explosive or flammable, such as aerosols and fuels, are also banned.

What to wear on a flight:

• Go for comfort over style. Prepare for temperature changes in the cabin by layering up, and wear flat, enclosed shoes like slip-ons.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a risk on long-haul flights. It results from blood clots forming due to poor circulation, so do some gentle leg and foot exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression tights or socks.
