Discover majestic villas, religious art, scenic walks and a leafy waterfront at this atmospheric old town on the southwestern shores of Lake Como.

Cernobbio is one of the many fascinating settlements on Italy’s beautiful Lake Como. It is a place where you can explore a lively waterfront and historic center and visit magnificent palaces and gardens. This beautiful lakeside town has a wonderful setting, backed by the forested slopes of Mount Bisbino.

A great way to discover Cernobbio is on foot. Start at Piazza Tolomeo Gallio and visit the baroque-style Chiesa di San Vincenzo (Church of St. Vincent) for its art treasures, including a 16th-century processional cross. Follow the winding lanes that lead from the piazza into Cernobbio’s historic heart. Once there, admire the handsome buildings in soft colors, many of which house cafés, pizzerias and trattorias, independent boutiques and souvenir shops. Then go to the waterfront to see ferries and expensive private yachts moored in the harbor.

Just south of the town center is the 19th-century Villa Erba. The lakeside mansion is an exhibition center and a museum dedicated to Italian theater and cinema director Luchino Visconti. There is also a formal garden that hosts festivals and concerts. North of Cernobbio’s center is the splendid Villa d’Este, an upscale hotel that was once the residence of Caroline of Brunswick, Princess of Wales. Marvel at the beauty of both villas on a boat trip from the town’s harbor.

Cernobbio also has several natural attractions. Be sure to visit the botanical gardens of Il Giardino della Valle, which has walking trails and native and exotic plants. Explore the caves and underground pools of Buco della Volpe, set into the slopes of Mount Bisbino. Hike along parts of the Via dei Monti Lariani, a scenic trail that traverses the hills between Cernobbio and Sorico.

Cernobbio is 3.7 miles (6 kilometers) north of Como and easily accessible via buses and ferries that travel between Lake Como destinations. An enjoyable way to get here is to walk from Como around the southwestern shores of the lake. Whether you come for a day or stay for longer, you can enjoy Cernobbio’s fascinating charms year-round.

OK stay, but misleading pictures.
"The photo in the picture if the pool is not part of the hotel. It is a communal pool 500metres from the hotel which also is of extra cost. I complained to hotels.com about it because we booked the hotel simply for the pool, which it doesn't have, yet the picture is still there. Very misleading. Parking ..."

Small town on the edge of Lake Como with a small very walkable town centre and access to the lake via boat tours. Relaxing place to visit as part of a tour of Lake Como

It's a small town right near Como. Streets are very narrow and quaint. We wanted to visit the downtown but could not find any parking area, so that was a bummer.

Great small Italian town right by the lake with picturesque views.

This is a very quiet, seemingly charming town. There really wasn't much to see, but the proximity to the transportation on Lake Como made it a good location.
