Located near the source of a river in the Italian region of Umbria, this municipality is famous for its olive groves and the walled medieval castle of Campello Alto.

Visit the fortified Campello Alto, consult the ancient oracles at the river’s springs and taste the olive oils and freshwater fish of the region during your visit to Campello sul Clitunno.

Campello sul Clitunno is a municipality in Perugia, located about 6 miles (10 kilometers) north of Spoleto and 28 miles (45 kilometers) southeast of Perugia. The “comune” is divided into the Campello Alto on the mountain and Campello Basso below in the river valley.

Campello Basso is the seat of the municipality and the main residential area. You’ll find accommodations, shops and restaurants here. Order crayfish or trout fresh from the river for a real taste of Umbria.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria, a church built in the 13th century, overlooks this hustle and bustle. Step inside to admire its 15th-century frescoed niche.

In Via Flaminia, visit the Tempietto del Clitunno (Temple of Clitumnus), one of three main tourism attractions in Campello sul Clitunno. This temple dates back to the 5th century and is UNESCO World Heritage listed. Pay the entrance fee to climb the steep stone stairs and admire the idyllic façade and ancient frescoes inside.

Campello Alto is a lofty fortified settlement that was developed around the castle known as Castello di Campello Alto, the town’s other major highlight. The castle and its circular walls were built by the nobleman Rovero di Champeaux in the 14th century. As you climb to the castle, pause regularly to take in the sweeping views of Campello Basso and surroundings.

A little farther along this same road to Trevi, visit the third main tourism attraction: the park at the source of the Clitunno River, known locally as Le Fonti del Clitunno. Watch the swans and ducks swim gracefully over the calm waters of the pond and ponder life back in ancient Roman days. There is no more peaceful place to bid your farewell to Campello sul Clitunno.
