Nestled on the western side of the Jurassic Coast, this unspoiled town is one of the most beautiful in Devon.

Visit Budleigh Salterton and relax on the unusual pebble beach and walk the pretty coastal paths. The town has historic churches, art galleries and museums. Take a boat trip out into the bay and see the Jurassic Coast. Explore the woodlands and countryside and watch for birds on the estuary.

Budleigh Salterton is in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Visit the town to explore one of the most gorgeous spots on the Jurassic Coast. See the rust-red rocks rise up over the sea, with the town running down the slope of the cliffs to the beach below. The pebbles of the beach are over 400 million years old. Formed from sandstone in what is now Brittany, they were subsequently transported by rivers during the Triassic period to form the Budleigh Salterton Pebble Beds.

Visit the Fairlynch Museum and Arts Centre to see archeological and geological specimens from the Lower Otter Valley, all housed in a beautiful thatched marine cottage. View other exhibits, including displays on period toys and local art and a Smuggler’s Den. The Local History exhibit contains a large amount of information on the town and surrounding area.

Take a trip back to the 18th century at Bicton Park Botanical Gardens. Relax in this 300-year-old landscaped garden and enjoy the other attractions on offer. Visit the historic glasshouses and the countryside museum, ride the Bicton Woodland Railway or play a round of mini-golf.

Enjoy walks through the wonderful surrounding countryside. Take the path alongside the River Otter and visit the village of Otterton. Watch for beavers here. Despite being hunted to extinction in Britain five centuries ago, a number of beavers have mysteriously shown up and made their home here.

Reach Budleigh Salterton by taking a bus from Exmouth, Sidmouth or ExeterOpens in a new window. The nearest train stations are at Honiton and Exmouth.
