I’m writing to share some feedback on a recent visit to your hotel, which unfortunately fell far short of expectations – especially given Hotel du Vin’s reputation for quality and its focus on wine.
I specifically booked with you because of your wine offering. However, when I went to the bar, I was told there was no wine list available. The staff member was unable to advise on the wines and offered me just one option for rosé – a standard, widely available bottle. I opted for a red instead, which again was a very generic choice, and not what I had hoped for in a hotel that prides itself on wine.
The staff member serving me clearly had no experience handling wine. They cut the foil incorrectly, couldn’t remove it fully, and ended up pulling the cork through the foil – pouring the wine from a ragged hole. This is not what I would expect from a wine-led venue and frankly, was quite disappointing.
I ordered a vegan meal – one of only two vegan options available – and a small glass of Rioja. When I checked the bill, I noticed I was charged more than expected. The server was unable to explain why, eventually discovering I had been automatically charged a discretionary service fee of £3.56. To be clear: I had walked up to the bar, ordered at the till, and had no prior interaction with the staff. There was no option for me to approve or adjust this charge, and I do not feel this was justified.
