Great hotel and onsen, especially for the price. We were assigned one of the 8th floor themed rooms with the Aso bear as decoration—adorable and great room. Room was spacious and beds comfortable. The buffet dinner and breakfast were well worth the price! The kids’ play room was fun; the indoor pool was great (including a sauna at 95 Celsius). We didn’t get a chance to do the regular onsen, but did reserve a private onsen, which was cheap and well worth it if you’re a little uncomfortable otherwise. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Location is great for visiting the Aso area as well. 10/10 hotel.
Wonderful onsen hotel. Some commented the hotel is "dated", thats most likely comparing to hotel in the city which is not fair comparison. For a hotel up in the mountains, this is a great hotel with spacious room. Private onsen for family is barely 2000 yen extra or 1 hour which is very cheap. Dinner buffet is great, not the best because a lot of touristsg group which kind of rush the kitchen to rush food out. But breakfast is wonderful and more enjoyable for sure.
I would definitely stay here again if I ever visit this area.
The overall experience was great. The room was spacious. For some people, they may consider the hotel rather old, but that was fine for us. The staff were really helpful.
Very nice staff, free spa/public bath, and nice room. We tried the dinner buffet, but we would not recommend. Selection was limited and quality was less then expected based on price.
The property was nice, but common restrooms smell. Not sure if the cleaning process caused it or something else. The lobby and also staircase common restrooms both smell.
This hotel seems to have lost its mojo. I think it might have been excellent in the 50s and 60s but today it’s a bit outdated and drab. The older staff do not speak any English some of the younger staff need to be called to translate. The room had no character but the view out the window was pretty nice. The saving grace was the dinner and breakfast buffet. The reason I stayed here was it was the only hotel near Kumamoto that had a room on a Saturday night. At $350 I expected more.
Excellent restaurant with a fantastic buffet breakfast. We stayed in one of the "Kumo" rooms which had nice views of Mount Aso. Would recommend to others.
A classic rural onsen resort hotel, a bit old but everything feels great, very affordable, only downside is a bit hard for solo travelers to reach due to it being almost 20 min walk from train station
We stayed two nights. The hotel was overall spacious and comfortable - I enjoyed both very big onsen's, our (Japanese room) room and the staff was always helpful.
But! The buffet is like a bunch of animals being fed on a farm.
IMO the organization and flow of traffic was poorly designed. Very few people have manners or consideration for others at the buffet. We were constantly being bumped by other customers fighting for food. It was a real turn off for our family. Originally I had consider returning with my elderly mother but after the second nights dinner, there is no way I will bring her here in this coming summer.
While I would like to stay at this location again, the buffet environment really was a turn off. It reminded me of my travels in some other Asian countries... not quite the Japan I have grown accustomed used to.
Otherwise I really like visiting Aso. It's a great place to visit in Japan.
The facilities are not well maintained. There was no security check or a staff at the entrance of the onsen, ended up a boy with 10-11 years old entered the ladies onsen.
