Gaze up at the impressive gateway to the Old Town of Lagos and learn about the patron saint of fishermen at the port.

The Arch of São Gonçalo is a historic gateway that marks the site of its namesake saint’s birth. It stands in a picturesque garden overlooking the harbor and the Atlantic Ocean. Enter the Old Town district of Lagos from the coastal boardwalk via this impressive arch.

Take photos of the gateway, which is built into the vestiges of the ancient city walls. It is enclosed by two large watch towers. Walk around the scenic surroundings of Constitution Garden and take shelter from the heat in the shade of a swaying palm tree. Find a sunny spot on a patch of grass and spread out a picnic with a backdrop of the ocean and the majestic arch.

On the other side of the arch is the coastal promenade, out of which juts a stony pier. Stroll leisurely along the dock and enjoy the excellent views of the water and the historic vestiges of the Old Town. Purchase snacks and refreshments from a stall beside the arch.

Note that within the arch’s building lies a small chapel, devoted to its eponymous saint. Find out about St. Gonçalo, who is thought to have been born on this spot in 1360. He became the patron saint of the local fishermen in Lagos and dedicated his life to studying the Bible, before he died in 1422. Hear the legends of his miracles, such as the multiplication of tuna fish in the sea.

You can see the arch at any time, although the structure itself is not open to the public. Access the garden for free to get a glimpse of the arch.

The Arch of São Gonçalo is in the southern part of Constitution Garden in the heart of Lagos. It is just east of the Algarve Hospital Center and is close to the harbor. Arrive at the Lagos Railway Station and walk southwest for about 20 minutes to get here. Visit nearby sights, such as the Santa Maria Church, the Governors’ Castle and the Edge of the Port.
