Typical moai - toppled sometime before the arrival of westerners, most likely during civil wars on this resource-starved island. There is a large town site here, though all that remains are stone foundations and cave huts. This site was part of a south coast tour led by an Australian named Bill, the husband of the lady that ran our B&B. Bill came to the island in 1992 as construction manager for Kevin Costner's film Rapa Nui, and became so enchanted that he decided to stay.
