The Galleria Sabauda consists of a collection of art that was established well over 150 years ago. The main body of the collection was drawn from the private art collection of the Dukes of Savoy, who spent centuries building their collection. Visit the collection today and you will find it appropriately housed in a wing of the Royal Palace of Turin.
The Royal Gallery that would eventually become the Galleria Sabauda was set up in 1832 in the Palazzo Madama. Over the years the collection grew as more and more donations and purchases occurred. See over 500 different artworks on display in the gallery nowadays.
The gallery has been hosted in its current location since 2014. The wing of the Royal Palace of Turin that now houses the gallery is known as the “new” wing. In reality, however, the wing was built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is only new in comparison to some of the older parts of the palace, which date back as far as the 16th century. Marvel at the opulence of the rooms, which make the perfect setting for the grand works of art on show.
Wander this elegant space and see artworks drawn from the 14th century up to the 20th century. View work by Flemish and Dutch Masters as well as Italian greats. Look for paintings by famous artists such as Giuseppe Maria Crespi, Jan van Eyck, Pieter Paul Rubens and many more besides. Don’t miss the wonderful paintings of Turin by Bernardo Bellotto.
Buy a ticket for the Musei Reali Torino (Royal Museums Turin) complex and you will gain access to a host of attractions spread across the site, including the Galleria Sabauda. Turin’s most famous relic, the Shroud of Turin, is in the Cappella della Sacra Sindone (Chapel of the Holy Shroud).
