Southeast of Tongatapu is the wild island of ‘Eua. Explore its caves and rainforests and look for some of the fascinating feathered species, such as the red shining parrot, that call the island home. Pause at lookouts along clifftops to photograph stunning views.
Fly into Tonga from New Zealand, Australia or Fiji. Alternatively, take a yacht from surrounding islands such as Samoa or the Cook Islands. Plan a trip from June through October for warm water and a bustling atmosphere. November through March is the wet season, but there are still plenty of activities to enjoy.
Be sure to bring conservative clothing, as Tonga’s religious culture means that it’s not acceptable to wear revealing clothing such as bikinis or short skirts in public. Check with your resort about policies on private beaches.
