Saint Martin

Travel Guide
Saint Martin
Enjoy the sun and sand in this tropical vacation hotspot, where surfers ride the waves and families comb the shimmering beaches for seashells.

Visit St. Martin to hike up historic fortresses, splash around in the cerulean waters surrounding the island and browse local markets. Embrace your sense of adventure by sailing to hidden coves, or simply stretch out and unwind with your toes in the sand.

St. Martin is one of two regions on the island of Saint Martin. St. Martin, the French side, is an overseas collectivity of France and occupies the northern region of the island. The other side of the island is Sint Maarten, part of the Netherlands. Learn a few words in French before you go to St. Martin, as it has many of the traditions and customs of France, including the language.

Straddling the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, St. Martin enjoys stunning beaches and offers plenty of opportunities for relaxing. On the western coast of the island, visit Long Bay for peaceful walks across chalk-white sands. For a beach with a difference, head to Red Bay, which takes its name from its colored sands.

If you’re looking to get active, go surfing in the swells at Petites Cayes Beach or take a beginner’s surfing lesson at Le Galion. Kite surfing is popular at the Orient Bay beaches, and wind surfing is often enjoyed on the eastern coast of the island, which is exposed to trade winds. The streets in the capital of Marigot are lined with boutiques and family-owned restaurants. Experience the bustle of Marigot Market and enjoy beautiful views from the historic Fort Louis, which was built to defend Marigot’s port. The West Indies Shopping Mall has plenty of designer stores as well as a beauty salon.

To get to the French side of the island, fly into Grand-Case Regional Airport. There is also the option to fly into the international airport on the Dutch side and then rent a car or hire a driver to help you continue your journey. There is only one main road, the Route Nationale 7, which circles the island.

Whether you’re looking to spend your time in the sea or on land, St. Martin has plenty of activities to keep you entertained.
