Get insights to the culture in the capital city of Johor Bahru, known to locals as JB. It is among Malaysia’s most sought-after shopping hubs, with countless malls that are open year round. Purchase clothes, electronic goods and souvenirs at bargain prices, as you spend afternoons in the KSL City Mall and the Mydin Mall.

The cultural highlight of the city is the Grand Palace, with its Royal Abu Bakar Museum and the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque. Browse the displays of fascinating royal trinkets and historic relics.

Head to the city outskirts for a change of scenery. Wander through the trails of Endau-Rompin National Park, which contains some of the country’s oldest forests. Spot exotic species of plants lining the paths and look for the many waterfalls on the park’s rivers.

On the southwestern tip of the mainland Asian continent is Tanjung Piai Johor National Park. See macaques and the bizarre mudskipper amphibians among the range of intriguing wildlife here.

Take a boat to one of the islands, such as Pulau Sibu and Pulau Aur, with their white-sand beaches and succulent seafood. Try the Malaysian lobster and crab dish to regain your energy after scuba diving. Sunbathe on the beaches to enjoy the year-round warm weather. The windy season runs from December to March.

The state is in the southernmost region of Malaysia, on the border with Singapore. Fly to Senai International Airport or arrive at the state’s international ferry terminal before getting around the state via buses. Consider renting a car for your trips.
