First impressions were "many pleasant surprises". Given Room 806, close to the elevators, large room for 2 for a single person, balcony with a half decent view, large closet, long desk, a bathroom you don't have to step up into (you have to step up into the bathroom in most Japanese hotels), huge selection in the buffet breakfast, including a sign that encourages you to take free drinks from the buffet (disposable cups, straws and lids provided), very friendly and knowledgeable front desk staff with excellent command of English, and reasonable distance to Sapporo Station (an 8 minute walk to a major transportation center). However, rust stain on caulk around the sink, black mold under the caulk by the bath tub, and more black mold under the stainless steel grab bar above the bath tub.
There are 106 Michelin rated restaurants in Sapporo, most centered around Susukino station, a 200 yen ride from the hotel. Almost all signs are in Japanese. This Canadian can only communicate in English. Asking for help from passerby was largely ignored. After many attempt, I was able to locate Ramen Shingetsu. Only 2 customers present, however I am entirely ignored.
At another restaurant, Gris, a Chinese restaurant near Odori park, I asked for a place for one. The gal immediately goes to a man who asks "do I have reservations". I answer no, then he enters my personal space, throws daggers in his eyes and expression and forces me out.
Racism/prejudices told me never come back.
