Private island with beautiful views and tranquility. A fantastic marine reserve that you could swim or kayak to and swim with amazing variety of fish. It was like swimming n an aquarium. Food was terrible!! Food service was bad, wait time for food was painfully long. Bar drinks only looked good, quality disappointing.

Property was really clean, great beach, overall friendly staff. The guys working at the water activities both were great! Our favorite part was the couple of cats roaming around the hotel gardens and bar. It added sweetness to the hotel :) The things we did not like: one of us is vegan and there was very little options. Especially when they had buffet dinners. Also, the bar staff was overall unfriendly and extremely slow. Also, it would have been nice if waiters came to the pool and served drinks there. Hated getting out of the pool and asking the bartender for a drink, and getting a “give me some time” reply. Especially when the bar was virtually empty.

Bora Bora Baby
The Sofitel in Bora was fantastic. They were renovating the overwater bungalows but you couldn’t even tell. The location is perfect for walking to dinner and the market. That location is valueable if you want local stuff and save some money. The beach is small but there were only about 10 other people there so it was perfect. The lagoon is beautiful and has reefs so you can snorkel right from the hotel. They give you fins and a mask for free so that’s great. Also, you can reserve a kayak for free and hit the coral gardens, which is near the Sofitel private island. (That’s a separate hotel across the lagoon from this Sofitel). It’s the perfect distance to kayak and see some of the best snorkeling in bora. All and all this place is fantastic, worth the price and is often time cheaper than other places on bora.

Lovely hotel, beautiful location and lovely staff. Breakfast wasn’t great - the food wasn’t refreshed or replenished and at 9am the buffet was empty despite running until 11am. We had to ask for Coffee, along with notifying the manager that there was no food left for customers on the breakfast buffet.

Beach Bungalow #2 has it's own little garden area out front which made it seem larger. Bungalow #3 however faces right on the beach which I think would be nicer at the end of the day. Sunlight this time of year is limited in the afternoon as beach faces eastward and sun goes behind the hills behind the beach. Not a problem for those staying on the Private Island which I would chose if $ permit. Understand resort will be closing soon for renos. May explain why hardly any of the wine on the list was available. Close to Lucky House restaurant which was delicious. Free minibar refilled daily helped save costs (pop, water and two beers). Drinks expensive at bar 1600 XPF +

Great location with snorkeling right off their beach. Beach bungalows were nice size and cleaned daily but somewhat dated. Breakfast buffet was awesome.

Would recommend Marara! Would love to come back.
The resort was great! Only complaint is the bugs and geckos in the room. Not sure how they get in but they did. The beach and pool were fantastic. The breakfast buffet was great, we looked forward to it every morning. Location was great 2500 francs to get to town on the taxi. We liked walking to Luckys for dinner. Some restaurants like St. James send a taxi to pick you up and drop you off. It only cost 400 francs. You can also do quite a bit of snorkeling off the shore and a 20 min kayak paddle gets you to the Coral garden for snorkeling. Spa was at the private island so we spent an afternoon and evening over there without having to pay triple the price to stay on the private island. We actually preferred the openness of Sofitel Marara over the more tightly developed Sofite private island.

Had a terrific experience in room 8 directly in front of the water . One of the workers, Pipi, was especially helpful at breakfast daily The woman at the bar was very unhelpful the Sunday night that we showed up 15 minutes before the dinner deadline. Probably because too many tourists miss the dinner cutoff on Sundays, a night the island shuts down early

Cute bungalow
Enjoyed our short stay. Bungalows are great our one smelt of damp and the entry door was a bit tricky to lock. Staff were very friendly, I would recommend staying here.

Beautiful grounds, lovely bungalows. Bed was not very comfortable in the marara hotel on the main land. The food at the hotel was not great, except for the pierrade dishes. The location was excellent, and lots of great snorkelling close by.

the Hotel needs some upgrading which is going to be done, later this year. some of the steps and railing one needs to be careful of, as they need fixing. But if you know that and it is what it is - then it was very enjoyable. Staff in regular Island style are willing to please and the Breakfast team give you an excellent start to the day. The rooms are spacious. I love the location being near to Matira village and beach. So many local restaurants within walking distances and they have fabulous local menus. the evening menu could have more local feel.

Disappointed on this Hotel for the price we paid
We just arrived last night to this hotel which was recommended to us by our friends . The lady at the reception last nite was very nice after a tiring trip to bira bira we decided to have dinner by the pool and there we encountered disaster , we waited an hour to get our food , they served us butter to start with but no bread to eat the butter with ?? We got a garden view bungalow our first time in Bora Bora for our honeymoon .the bungalow is alright but TV doesn’t work too much disturbance and WiFi is very very slow always shows no network. We were in Moorea previous 3 days and since it was our honeymoon they upgraded us to a beautiful bungalow and offered us a bottle of champagne in our room to congratulate us on our wedding . We were expecting good service from the Sofitel in Bora Bors but very disappointed we asked for an ocean side and they said sure but you have to pay extra. Would not recommend this hotel for honeymoon stay.

The scenery is stunning and snorkeling under your room is an amazing experience. The room is large with everything you need for a nice stay. The only disappointment was the dinner. Breakfast was fabulous.

Everyone was out to extract money..
Overpriced and minimal efforts to accommodate. Sunscreen was $27.00 at the hotel. Guest services would call everyday just to see if there was a new way to cipher money. Meals averaged $40pp and every drink was the cost of the bottle. Too expensive for the qaulity of resort.. Airline cancelled flights for two days, leaving no option but to extend at a higher rate offered. Very limited activities as well.

Honeymoon in Paradise
From the moment we landed in the tiny airport in Bora Bora, we were greeted by a Sofitel employee and received our leis. We then jumped on to a motor boat and rode through the most beautiful sites either of us had ever seen. After 25 minutes or so, we got to the resort and were greeted by a couple more extremely nice and outgoing Sofitel employees. Check-in was a breeze and we were in our room within 15 minutes. Our room was beautiful and had a bottle of champagne and rose pedals waiting on our bed. By the 3rd day of our vacation all the employees already knew our names and we felt like family. The staff gives you privacy when you want it, and are there with whatever you request in minutes when you need it. The views from the room, pool and restaurant are out of this world. The restaurants and shows were great and fun. If you're planning your honeymoon or a big anniversary, look no further, this is where you want to be for your romantic getaway. We're definitely going back as soon as we can.

Overall maintenance is not well maintained. The drainage is very stinky and does not drain well. Bed sheets and pillow cases smell badly, too. I have to spray a lot of perfume nightly before going to bed.

Great place with an awesome view
My wife and I stayed at the Sofitel Marara for Christmas. We stayed in the overwater bungalow which was certainly worth it as we had non interrupted views of the ocean. We also used the transfer boat service from the airport (which is dearer than the local boat). Upon arrival we were greeted in French Polynesian style and taken to the boat. It then takes about 20 mins across to the Sofitel. Sofitel Marara is part of the Bora Bora Island as well and they do have a private island resort too. We arrived earlier than the check in time of 2pm but were well looked after. Whilst we waited we were provided free breakfast and to just lounge around. They also worked hard in getting the room ready for us which was made available by 11am - a real bonus! Our room was amazing, provided incredible views of the lagoon and sea. Amenities were also well worth the price, with a mini bar supplied with lots of water and free canned drinks for our stay. We were also given a free Sofitel T Shirt and a sarong. The bed was large and comfortable as was the bathroom. The room was well sized and the balcony area outside provided sun loungers and a side step to go for a swim directly from your bungalow. Breakfast was provided every morning, but was limited in selection. Fruits wise it was great to get majority of the tropical fruits. Food options are provided in the local restaurants but are pricey. There is a mini mart 5 mins walk where you can get a few things and The Lucky House takeaway. A must do.

Very nice bungalows over water
Me and my husband stayed in November 2017 for 10 nights. We had a nice bungalow over water with a beautiful view. Rooms are spacious and bathroom too. It was just perfect. I would definitely recommend this resort. They also have a lovely beach and swimming pool. Hotel staff are nice. They welcomed us with a flower necklace and played music. We had a champagne in the room when we arrived. And they gave us complementary drinks every day.

wonderful welcome at airport and upon arrival but would not use word 'luxury' as hotel does - would classify as 3-star venue > seems run-down as broken/dated items are not being fixed/replaced (ex. frayed and marked robe and towels in room, rusted mirror in unit, broken and stained white beach loungers, doors missing slats, worn-out billiards table in restaurant) considering cost of accommodations; little storage space in room but comfy slippers provided; Polynesian show with buffet dinner very good but poor set-up to view performers; wonderful staff

Was great!
The staff, room, location, view was amazing! Just a few small pointers before heading to the French Polynesia!!!! Pack your swim suit and sun block in your carry on. We got there at 8am and didn't get to check in til 3pm! Also get a wall adapter that goes from european to American! They also sell them at the local market. We bought light snacks there to avoid buying 2 meals a day. Also think about packing your own liquor or wine, as it is pretty pricey to order. But all in all the stay was fantastic, we are already talking and planning our next trip!

right on the water. can snorkel from room.
I stayed here for about 12 days. by the 7th day I was ready to leave. I tried several times to contact someone at cheap tickets to no avail. I also called my phone/internet provider to help me because for calls from Bora Bora to a 1-800 number are not allowed to cheap tickets. it was paradise mostly. by the 7th or 8th day, beetles come. geckos are also in the room and lived behind the painting and up in the rafters. if you don't mind that part, its alright. definitely worth the money but it is not, a 4 star hotel. NEEDS MORE ENGLISH SPEAKING STAFF AND better amounts of currency on hand.

Overrated place, beach so, so. Do not recommend.
Very loud music every night from the hotel bar. Promised a beach bungalow - got one with the bar view and beach view was obstructed by trees, parked boats, and overhanging straw roof down to the level of 4 feet. Beach is so, so, water temperature great, but for real swimming you need to navigate between corals which are beautiful, but dangerous because they come up very close to water surface. Beach is very short. Breakfast are great, but other meals are nothing spectacular and prices are obscene; well, it is France, after all. Would not recommend this place, and would not recommend Bora Bora, by that matter. There are other, nicer islands, in French Polynesia, and in other parts of the world. Bora Bora is an overrated place, used by snobs and young couples "filled" with vanity.

Nice hotel on the main island
Sofitel is the oldest hotel in the region. It is helpful for those wanting to stay on the main island of Bora and do shopping, trekking, rental car, mountain actives, etc. The overwater bungalow was decent and clean, but showed signs of wear and tear and the water was not the greatest. Wi-fi is good. Breakfast is decent but no espresso available at breakfast, no local fish, not a big variety of fruits. Pool is really small. I would not recommend this with all the other options available on the islands and surrounding Motu

On the beach
This hotel has a very friendly staff and the restaurant offers decent quality of food, but pricing is extremely high. We stayed in a beach-side bungalow which I would recommend over the over-water bungalows. We took a trip to the "Private Island" which I recommend for sunset views, but I don't recommend the "romantic dinner". The main hotel is in need of updating as it is very dated. There is an air of old Tahiti which makes the hotel unique and charming.
